Still awaiting updates on the server. I’m not sure how much longer we’re going to be here at this temporary site. :( Thanks for being so patient with us, guys!

By the way, please keep www.girlswithslingshots.com as your bookmark for GWS; it should refer you to this page. URL masking isn’t working, for some reason. Because I needed more problems, sigh.

On a brighter note, if you miss the community aspect of the regular GWS site, you’re welcome to check out the strips at the GWS FaceBook fan page and chat with fellow readers! The people there are real nice and Rose (our loyal moderator) is the sweetest ever!

Christmas Shoes

A very nice GWS reader asked very sincerely why I was cracking on the horrendous song “The Christmas Shoes” (click at your own risk), so I gave him a very sincere answer. Some people wanted to hear what I wrote, so I thought I’d post it here. Since, y’know, I keep forgetting that I have a Tumblr. :)

The people who HATE this song are probably the same kind of people who are immune to things like pushy advertising and the over-dramatization of Fox News. If you’re prone to over-analyzing things rather than taking them at face value, you’ll probably hate Christmas Shoes.

Now, if you’d like to enjoy the song without my curmudgeon-y breakdown of it, feel free to skip the next two paragraphs! :)

The thing is, while I don’t know the singer of this song or his intentions, the whole thing reeks of “look at what an incredible person I am.” The most exciting part of this song (musically speaking) is the part where he humble-brags about how he helped the little boy out, and then he DARES to suggest that the little boy’s very real, heartbreaking plight was all laid out in front of him JUST to get him in the Christmas spirit, as if the narrator/singer were the most important person in the song. It’s a viewpoint that real people actually have; that everything around them was put there by God to help THEM. It’s a very self-centered concept.

Had he simply changed the words so that an unidentified man behind the little boy helped him pay for the shoes - instead of the very person singing it - and skipped the thoughtless, condescending part where he thinks the meaning of the whole sad situation was to put someone more fortunate in a good mood, then it would simply be a tear-jerker of a song (one that I still wouldn’t like, because it’s so overly-emotional, but at least it would have merit!).

So, on top of all that, from a personal standpoint I just don’t like many sad songs. I tend to make a “BLEAH”-face whenever a song comes on the radio that was obviously written in a way to make you feel sad and sorry for yourself.

That said, I’m sure there are a lot of songs I like that are meant to make me feel sad and sorry for myself, and I just let ‘em slide because for some reason or another I like them! So I’m not claiming superiority, just personal taste. :)

It looks like Google has finally cleared my URL for safe browsing, hooray!

In case you’re new to the news, we had an “incident” last week (read: some bored asshole) and our servers have been down for repair since the weekend. Thanks to everyone who’s been notifying me, reassuring me (I’ve needed it!), and continuing to follow me via other means (Twitter, Facebook, etc.).

For now, we’re going to keep GWS here at the temporary Tumblr site, which is actually quite nice for a temporary home! If you’d like to enjoy Something*Positive strips as well, Randy was kind enough to combine our newest strips together at http://corsettoandmilholland.tumblr.com/.

Our hero, Mike the Tech Guy, has been working since Friday (yes, over Labour Day weekend) to get our servers back up, but it may take a couple of days to get everything back to normal.

Hey guys! I’m sorry there’s been radio silence for the past few days. The entire Blind Ferret server has been mostly down since Friday, and while our tech guy has been working all weekend long (on a holiday, even!) to fix the problem, we’ve been struggling to get everything back to normal.

For now, a lot of us webcomic artists are posting on temporary websites and redirecting our URLs until the coast is clear. No need to bookmark anything or remember this location; I’ll manually move Girls With Slingshots back to its original home once we’re back up and running.

I’ve posted the last 15 strips in order from newest to oldest below, so that you can read the latest story arc in order (just scroll down to the bottom and read up if you want a refresher!). With any luck, we won’t even need to stay here long enough to get used to this temporary format.

Thanks to everyone who sent e-mails and tweets telling us about the problems! I like to think of this as a little camp-out with my readers, like during a storm when there’s a blackout and we’re all stuck huddling under blankets to keep warm and lighting candles.

It looks like Tumblr doesn’t offer a comments section (yes, I’m so old that I don’t know anything about Tumblr), so if you find you miss the community aspect of the comments on the blog page, please feel free to visit the GWS fan page on Facebook!

Additionally - since so many creators’ websites were affected by this problem - Randy is posting the newest GWS and Something*Positive strips on a joint Tumblr page. (He’s got a theme that only allows 750px wide images, so Randy was kind enough to cut up the GWS strips to fit.)
